Summer Patch Fungus: How to Spot It (and Stop It) in Your Lawn

Plush green grass

Summer Patch FungusIf you’ve noticed yellow rings, thinning grass, or spots that just don’t seem to bounce back, you might be dealing with Summer Patch Fungus. This pesky disease shows up when the weather turns hot and humid, and it goes straight for your turf’s roots.

What Exactly Is Summer Patch?

Summer Patch is a soil-borne fungus that weakens the roots and crowns of your grass. Once it sets in, your lawn struggles to take in water and nutrients—so even if you’re watering, it may still look stressed.

Some signs to look for:

  • Yellow or brown rings that slowly expand
  • Patches of grass that thin out or die off completely
  • Turf that pulls up easily because the roots are weak

Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescues (very common here in Iowa) are especially prone to it.

Why Does It Show Up?

Fungus loves lawns that are already under stress. Things like compacted soil, poor drainage, shallow watering, or mowing too short create perfect conditions for Summer Patch to spread. Once our Iowa summers crank up the heat and humidity, it’s game on for the fungus.

How to Protect Your Lawn

The good news? A few smart habits can make your lawn much tougher against Summer Patch:

  • Mow at the right height. For bluegrass, that’s usually around 3–3.5 inches.
  • Aerate the soil. This helps relieve compaction and improves root growth. (We’re scheduling aerations now!)
  • Water deep, not often. About an inch a week, early in the morning.
  • Keep drainage in mind. If water pools or the soil stays soggy, it may be time for some adjustments.
